How to store wine at home

Most wine is made to drink within a couple of years, so you don’t need a cellar. You just need to avoid wine’s four enemies: heat, light, temperature swings and dry corks.

The simple rules

  • Cool and steady: about 55°F is ideal, but any steady spot under 70°F is fine for months.
  • Dark: sunlight and bright bulbs damage wine.
  • On its side: keeps natural corks moist (screwcaps can stand up).
  • Away from vibration and smells: not on top of the fridge.

Good spots at home

A closet floor on an inside wall, a basement, or a small wine fridge if you buy by the case. Avoid the kitchen, garage and anywhere near a heater.

Which wines are worth aging?

Only a few: top Cabernet and Bordeaux, Nebbiolo, Riesling, vintage Port, Champagne and sweet wines like Sauternes. Most everyday wines are at their best now.

Frequently asked questions

Can you store wine in the fridge?

For a few weeks, yes. Long-term, a regular fridge is too cold and dry for corks.
